  65. A.    The only model that is currently upgradable to 33,600 is the
  66. Sportster 28,800 data/fax modem.  All Sportster 14,400, 9,600 and
  67. 2,400 modems are not upgradable.

  86. A.    No, these units do not have a 33,600 upgrade as of yet. We
  87. will post more information when and if 33,600 is offered for these
  88. models.

  90. Q.    How do I know if my Sportster 28,800 data/fax modem supports
  91. 33,600?
  92. A.    The most recent supervisor code for a non-33,600 modem is
  93. 4/18/95. If your modem
  94.     has a supervisor date of 4/18/95 or earlier it does not support
  95. 33,600. 
  96.     Modems with the following supervisor dates support 33,600:
  97.     9-19-95
  98.     10-13-95
  99.     10-18-95
  100.     The ATI7 (ati7)  option screen will also show V34+ if your modem
  101. supports 33,600.

  104. Q.    When will I receive my upgrade chip?
  105. A.    Currently the 33,600 upgrade chips have not been released to
  106. shipping. 
  107.     We will update this document to reflect current status.

  109. How to place an upgrade order.

  111. There are a number of ways to place an order for the 33,600 upgrade
  112. chip for the 
  113. Sportster modem. Orders can be placed via U.S.Robotics BBS, FAX and
  114. Phone.

  145. Sportster 28,800 modems purchased between 11/3/95 - 12/3/95 qualify
  146. for a free upgrade
  147. with Proof Of Purchase.  
  148. **If you qualify for the free update,  you MUST call 847 982-5151 and

  151. number to send

  174. Q.    My 33,600 Sportster will only connect at 28,800.  How do I get
  175. higher connection rates?
  176. A.    The modem you are calling will need to support 33,600.  If the
  177. modem you are calling supports 33,600  the problem may be related to
  178. phone line conditions.
  179.  
  180. Q.    What are the ideal settings for my Internet dialer?
  181. A.    In the software ensure the Initialization String is AT&F1,
  182. Flow Control is set to RTS/CTS or Hardware, and the Port Rate or Speed
  183. is 38400, 57600, or 115200.
  184.     **Note that these settings are for Hardware Flow control. Some
  185. Internet dialers may require Software flow control. For software flow
  186. control use an initialization string of AT&F2 and set to   software
  187. flow control or Xon/Xoff.

  189. Q.    How do I adjust the volume on the modem?
  190. A.    External modems: The volume control is located on the left
  191. side of the modem. 
  192.     Internal modems: Use of the following commands in the initialization
  193. string.
  194.     L1 (softest setting) through L3 (loudest setting)  eg:AT&F1L3
  195.  
  196. Q.    I connect to most on-line services, but I have problems with
  197. this one service....
  198. A.    If the specific On-line service you are having problems with
  199. requires its own program you may try one of the alternate
  200. initialization strings listed in the Tech Tips section of this
  201. document. Try to call the same number with another program. If you are
  202. able to connect with another program there may be a software
  203. configuration issue.  You will want to contact their technical support
  204. if our software configuration did not solve the problem.

  206. Q.    How do I find out the supervisor date or firmware revision of
  207. my modem?
  208. A.    To find out the supervisor date or firmware revision of your
  209. modem we will need your ATI7 (ati7) information. This command can be
  210. sent to the modem from a terminal mode of  QuickLink II and QuickLink
  211. II Message Center which all start in a terminal mode. For Mac users
  212. using Mac Com Center you will need to click the On-Line button to
  213. access the terminal window.  For other software packages please
  214. consult their documentation for this procedure.

  216. Type "AT" if the software is seeing the modem properly the modem will
  217. respond with 
  218. an "OK". 
  219.  
  220. Now type "ATI7"  (ati7) the modem should respond with the following
  221. information.
